Silchester Walk

Thanks to the stirling efforts of BasingHums Member, Stephen Bibby, Basingstoke Humanists organised a countryside walk and lunch, for Saturday, 6th August.

The walk was a joint project with Farnham Humanists, but took place in nearby Silchester.
The primary aim was to enjoy the summer countryside in the company of like-minded people, so the route was not particularly onerous – indeed there is a longer walk and a shorter version to choose from, and they both explore the ancient Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum.
However, the climax of the walk was at the ampitheatre, which is just outside the ancient Roman town, and is in remarkably good condition considering that it is as old as the Coliseum in Rome. It is an evocative place.
The weather was kind and it was a great day out!
